Your complete pre-cruise checklist

Cruising for the first time on the Genting Dream is genuinely exciting — and a little overwhelming if you don't know what to expect. The good news: it's a remarkably well-organised process once you understand the timeline. This guide walks you through every step from the day you book until the day you disembark.

Everything below is based on the official StarDream Cruises pre-cruise guidelines for 2026 sailings from Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore, cross-checked against our own onboard experience across 30-plus sailings. Specific numbers (gratuity rates, fuel surcharge, online check-in timing) reflect the current 2026 policy and are subject to change — re-confirm at booking.

Step 1 — Plan ahead

Booking & Pre-Cruise Timeline

When to do what, working backwards from your sailing date.

3–6 monthsBefore sailing

Book your cruise

Best fares and cabin availability are 3–6 months ahead, especially for peak school holidays and festive long weekends. Connecting cabins for families and Palace suites sell out fastest.

  • Choose itinerary (2N, 3N, 4N, 5N — see Itinerary guide)
  • Pick your cabin category (see Cabin guide)
  • Pay deposit; the balance is due 60 days before sailing
60 daysBefore sailing

Pay the cruise balance

Full balance is due 60 days before departure. After this date, cancellation penalties typically increase steeply — check your specific booking terms.

  • Cruise fare balance
  • Port charges & gratuity (often paid as part of balance, sometimes onboard)
  • Fuel surcharge from 20 March 2026: SGD 15 per person per night
30 daysBefore sailing

Check passport & visas

Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your sailing date. Check visa requirements for every port visited (depends on your nationality).

  • Renew passport if expiry is less than 6 months out
  • Apply for any required port visas
  • Buy travel insurance (strongly recommended — not mandatory)
7 daysBefore sailing

Pre-book onboard extras

Specialty restaurant tables, spa treatments and shore excursions can be reserved through the StarDream Cruises website or the dining team after boarding. Booking ahead saves the day-1 rush.

  • Pre-book Umi Uma teppanyaki (sells out fastest)
  • Reserve Crystal Life Spa treatments for port days (cheaper)
  • Pick shore excursions if relevant
72 hoursBefore sailing

Mandatory online check-in opens

Visit stardreamcruises.com → Manage My Cruise and complete the online check-in. Closes 24 hours before sailing. Skipping this means a much longer queue at the cruise terminal.

  • Upload passport details + a clear passport photo
  • Confirm emergency contacts & dietary preferences
  • Download the StarDream Cruises mobile app
3 daysBefore arrival in SG

Submit Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC)

All non-Singaporean travellers must submit the Singapore Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival in Singapore. There is no app needed; the form is on the official ICA website.

  • Free to submit — never pay third-party sites
  • Keep the confirmation email or screenshot
Day beforeSailing day eve

Pack & arrive in Singapore

If you're flying in, book a hotel in Singapore for the night before. Never plan to arrive the same morning — flight delays will make you miss the ship and cruise lines do not refund missed sailings.

  • Hotels near Marina Bay Cruise Centre or central Singapore work well
  • Keep all documents + medication in a carry-on, not checked luggage
  • Print e-ticket as backup (in case of phone battery issues)
Step 2 — Get ready

Documents You Must Carry

Bring physical copies where possible. Digital backups in your email + phone too — but printed e-tickets help if Wi-Fi or apps glitch on boarding day.

📄 Essential — must have

  • PassportValid for at least 6 months from your sailing date.
  • Cruise e-ticketPrinted copy or saved on phone — both ideally.
  • Online check-in confirmationThe QR code or reference from rwcruises.com.
  • Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC)Submit online within 3 days before arrival.
  • NRIC/FIN or birth certificateFor Singapore residents under 15 only.
  • Visas (if applicable)Some ports require visas depending on nationality.
  • Credit/debit cardFor onboard charges; cards from Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, Amex accepted.
Important: Your passport will be collected by cruise staff on boarding and held safely throughout the sailing. It will be returned to you the night before disembarkation — usually at a designated counter near the front of your deck. Don't panic; this is standard procedure for international cruises from Singapore.
Step 3 — Pack smart

What to Pack — Practical Checklist

Each guest is allowed up to 2 pieces of personal luggage onboard. Travel light — your cabin is compact and the cruise is short.

👕 Clothing essentials

  • Smart-casual outfits for dinner (1 per night)
  • Daytime: T-shirts, shorts, sundresses
  • Swimwear (at least 2 sets — one dries while one is worn)
  • Cover-up or sarong for the pool walk
  • Closed shoes for dinner + ropes course
  • Flip-flops or sandals for the pool
  • Light cardigan or jacket (the ship is heavily A/C)
  • One smart outfit for optional elegant night
  • Workout gear if you plan to use the gym

🧴 Toiletries & personal

  • Sunscreen — SPF 30+ (essential on top decks)
  • Insect repellent for port days
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Personal medications + Rx copy
  • Seasickness tablets (just in case)
  • Basic first-aid: plasters, painkillers
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Phone charger + power bank
  • Universal travel adapter (UK 3-pin works in SG)

🎒 Carry-on essentials

  • All documents (passport, ticket, insurance)
  • All medications + Rx
  • Phone, charger, power bank
  • Camera or DSLR (sunset shots!)
  • Headphones
  • One change of clothes (luggage delay buffer)
  • Swimwear (pools open before luggage arrives)
  • Cash + cards
  • Snacks for the queue (long check-in waits)
Pro tip: Cruise lines and the staff at Marina Bay recommend traveling with luggage smaller than 55cm × 25cm × 40cm. Anything larger must be checked in at the entrance and is delivered to your cabin within 2–4 hours — meaning you might not have your main bag immediately when you board. Pack your swimwear + change of clothes in your carry-on so you can hit the pool while you wait.
Don't pack these

Prohibited Items on the Genting Dream

Step 4 — Budget right

Step 5 — Arrival day

Getting to Marina Bay Cruise Centre

The Genting Dream sails from Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS) at 61 Marina Coastal Drive, Singapore 018947. Here are the practical ways to get there.

🚖

Taxi / Grab

Easiest · door-to-door

From Changi Airport — about 25 minutes. From central Singapore (Orchard, Marina Bay) — 10–20 minutes. Best option if travelling with luggage or family.

~SGD 25–35 from airport
🚇

MRT (Train)

Cheapest

Take the North-South Line (NS) to Marina South Pier station (NS28) — the terminus. Exit A, walk about 600 metres / 10 minutes to the cruise centre. Newer alternative: Gardens by the Bay station on the Thomson-East Coast Line.

~SGD 2–3 from city
🚌

Bus

Budget option

Public bus 400 stops near the cruise centre. Not recommended with bulky luggage — works fine if you're travelling light.

~SGD 1.50 fare
Where to stay the night before: If you're flying in, book a hotel in Singapore for the night before sailing. Areas near Marina Bay, Chinatown or Tanjong Pagar are most convenient for the cruise centre. Anywhere in central Singapore works — give yourself buffer time on sailing morning for traffic and the long check-in queue at the terminal.
Step 6 — Boarding day

Embarkation — The Marina Bay Cruise Centre Process

This is the single most common pain point of the Genting Dream — expect 1 to 2 hours of queue time during peak periods. Here's exactly what happens, step by step.

  1. Arrive at the terminal on time

Get to 61 Marina Coastal Drive at least 2 hours before the "last boarding" time on your ticket. Arrive at the start of your assigned boarding window — not earlier, not later. Palace guests have a separate VIP entrance.

    Bring: Passport + e-ticket
  2. Drop off check-in luggage

Head to the baggage drop area outside the main entrance. Staff will tag each bag with your deck and cabin number — your luggage will be delivered to your cabin within 2–4 hours. Bags larger than 55×25×40 cm must be checked in.

Keep: Passport, meds, valuables, swimwear, change of clothes
  3. Security screening

Pass through airport-style X-ray and metal detection. Outside alcohol, weapons and other prohibited items will be confiscated here. Alcohol is held until disembarkation; perishables and banned items are disposed of.

    Time: 10–20 minutes typically
  4. Singapore immigration

Show your passport and Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC) confirmation. Foreign nationals may also need to scan biometrics. This is standard departure immigration.

    Time: 15–30 minutes during peak
  5. Check-in at counter — collect your Access Card

Present your e-ticket and passport. You'll receive your red Access Card — your room key, ship ID and onboard payment method. A lanyard is usually provided. Your passport will be collected and held by cruise staff for the duration of the sailing.

Receive: Access Card · Surrender: Passport
  6. Wait for boarding group call

You'll be directed upstairs to a waiting area. Boarding groups are called in sequence — listen for announcements or watch the screen. Palace guests are called first.

    Time: 15–45 minutes
  7. Board the ship

Walk through the gangway onto the ship. A welcome photo is taken (optional purchase). The crew will direct you to your deck or to a public area while cabins are finalised — usually after 2:00 PM. Cabin doors typically open from mid-afternoon.

    You're onboard!
  8. Mandatory safety drill

Every passenger must attend the safety drill — typically held in the early evening of the sailing day. Your assembly station is printed on your Access Card. Skipping the drill is taken seriously and can delay the ship's departure.

    Time: ~20 minutes
Worth knowing: Once you clear that final boarding scanner, the queue feeling completely disappears. The ship is calm, the welcome is warm, and you're free to explore. Most regulars head straight to The Lido buffet for late lunch, then up to the pool deck while their luggage finds its way to the cabin.
First few hours

Once You're Onboard — Your Day-1 Playbook

What our team always does in the first few hours of every sailing, in order. Follow this and you'll skip 80% of common first-timer mistakes.

  1. Head to The Lido for late lunch

The buffet on Deck 16 is open from boarding. It's the easiest first meal — and a great way to orient yourself with the layout. Outdoor seating is calmest.

  2. Find your assembly station

It's printed on your Access Card. Walk past it once so you know exactly where to go for the safety drill — saves time later.

  3. Drop in at the dining desk on Deck 6

Book your specialty restaurant reservations on day-1 — especially Umi Uma teppanyaki and Bistro by Mark Best. They sell out fastest. Palace guests can ask their butler.

  4. Pick up the Dream Daily program

Available in your cabin or at Guest Services. This is your master schedule for the sailing — show times, themed nights, kids' club sessions, pool deck activities, port-day timings.

  5. Download the StarDream Cruises app

The app shows the daily program, lets you book dining and excursions, and shows your bill in real-time. Free to download; works on the ship's intranet without needing a Wi-Fi package.

  6. Check the Crystal Life Spa for port-day specials

Spa prices drop noticeably on port days when most guests go ashore. Book one of these slots in advance — same treatment, much better value.

  7. Attend the safety drill

Mandatory. Usually held early evening. Listen for the announcement, head to your assembly station with your Access Card.

  8. Enjoy sail-away from Deck 19

The best spot to watch Singapore disappear over the horizon. Bring a drink from the Sun Deck Bar and find a quiet corner. The casino opens once the ship clears Singapore waters.

What to wear

Dress Code by Venue

The Genting Dream's overall code is smart-casual — much more relaxed than old-school cruise formal nights. Here's the venue-by-venue reality.

Pool deck & daytimeRelaxed

Shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, swimwear at the pool only. Cover up to leave the pool area.

The Lido buffetCasual

T-shirts and shorts are fine even at dinner. The only "no" is wet swimwear or no shirt.

Dream Dining RoomsSmart-casual

Collared shirts, dresses or smart trousers for dinner. No flip-flops or swimwear.

Specialty restaurantsSmart-casual+

Slightly smarter for Umi Uma, Silk Road or Prime Steakhouse. Closed shoes recommended.

Zodiac TheatreCasual

Whatever you wore to dinner is fine. Bring layers — the theatre runs cool.

Zouk Nightclub / Beach ClubAnything goes

Foam-party guests show up in swimwear. Standard club attire otherwise.

Optional smart-elegant nightDressier

On 3-night+ sailings, one night is flagged smart-elegant. Cocktail dress or smart suit — not required, just encouraged.

Ropes course & activitiesAthletic

Closed shoes mandatory for ropes course, zipline and rock climbing. Athletic wear for the SportsPlex.

Last day

Disembarkation — The Final Morning

The last morning is busier than you'd expect. Plan ahead and you'll be off the ship in 30 minutes; rush it and you'll spend hours in another queue.

  1. Settle your onboard bill — night before

On the second-to-last evening, settle any outstanding balance via the app or at Guest Services. Doing this the night before saves a long morning queue.

Check: Your folio for unfamiliar charges
  2. Collect your passport — also night before

Passports are usually returned at a designated counter near the front of your deck, the night before disembarkation. Times are listed in the Dream Daily. Skipping this is the #1 reason for delays.

Bring: Your Access Card for verification
  3. Pack & tag your luggage

If you don't want to carry your bags off, leave them outside your cabin door by the specified time (usually before midnight). They'll be collected and you'll pick them up at the terminal baggage claim.

Keep: Documents, meds, valuables in your carry-on
  4. Follow your assigned departure time

The Disembarkation Notice you receive on the last night tells you your departure window and meeting point. Don't try to leave early — you'll be sent back to wait.

Be ready: At your meeting point, on time
  5. Pass through Singapore immigration

Standard arrival immigration — passport ready, follow the queue. Usually quicker than embarkation.

    Time: 15–30 minutes
  6. Collect luggage & head out

Baggage claim is just past immigration. Taxi rank and MRT entrance are right outside the terminal. The whole disembarkation usually takes 30–60 minutes if you've prepped the night before.

    You're done!
Final tip: Hold off booking a flight out of Changi any earlier than 3:00 PM on disembarkation day. Even with the best disembarkation timing, you'll need 1–1.5 hours from ship to airport plus security and boarding time. Many guests miss flights by trying to cut it too close.
